Volleyball can be a very competitive sport, so it’s understandable to want to improve in every single way you can. Oftentimes the road to improvement can be obvious, but when you’re completely engrossed in the sport it can be a lot to take in. This becomes especially apparent if you happen to doubt your abilities, and especially your ability to improve. Here are a few simple ways in which you can help improve your volleyball game and help steer your mindset in the right direction.

Don’t forget to relax!

This is perhaps one of the most important steps to truly improving your volleyball skills. Too much work ends up being counter-productive. In fact, you’re more likely to hurt your chances than improve if you overwork. Always take time for yourself, to do what you enjoy doing without any pressure. If you’re the type to enjoy leisurely activities such as recreational gambling, has plenty of avenues in which you can vent out and have a little fun. Give your loved ones a visit, and enjoy your time with them. Remember that your mindset matters and having a good time with the people you care about will take the burden off your shoulders.

Learning to minimise movement

This might seem counterproductive, but you don’t have to dart from place to place when you play volleyball. Instead, it’s important to be as efficient as you possibly can with your movement. This is more difficult than it seems, but it is still a simple change of mindset. Try not to move more than you have to – and instead anticipate the situation and move just a few steps instead of scrambling. Eventually, with practice, you’ll be able to accurately predict the situation, and you’ll not only be prepared to face it but also have more than enough energy to retaliate.

Chasing the ball when it isn’t necessary

This is a habit many athletes tend to develop because they’ve been taught to do so since day one. Unfortunately, this will only end up hurting your performance overall because it wastes energy. Similar to the method above, efficiency is key. It’s important to be able to trust your teammates to get the job done, instead of chasing after the ball when it’s no longer necessary to do so. Learn to read the body language of the players around you, and you’ll be able to accomplish this feat easily.

Playing volleyball is a lot of fun, and some of that fun is unfortunately taken away when you start to take it more and more seriously. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s making it difficult for you to relax, raising your overall anxiety and making you perform even worse. Ensure that you have ample time to yourself and that you work on your volleyball game with a clear mind.
